Intrinsic aging is also known as the natural aging process that normally begins in our mid-20s and is progressive. This affects all layers of the skin and its underlying structures.
Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance giving the skin its elastic properties, has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells don’t shed as fast and there is a decrease in new skin cells production.
The underlying structures also change. Muscles slowly waste away and shrink, fat is lost in some areas and gained in others and we also lose bone. The reduction and changes in these underlying structures causes changes in the shape of our faces and accentuates sagging skin and volume loss.
While these changes usually begin in our 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging are typically not visible for decades.
To maintain, or regain our youthful appearance, best results are seen with a combination of treatments to address multiple layers and concerns. Thankfully many of our treatments can address more than one concern, so a skin consultation is usually the best place to start.
We recommend you see one of our Dermal Therapists for an initial consultation, where a personalised treatment program will be designed to address your individual needs and concerns.
