Dry skin can be due to genetic factors or an acquired condition and is extremely common in its mild form, which is generally caused by an impaired skin barrier function, resulting in increased water loss in the outer layers of the skin.
This prevents the necessary enzymes from releasing the dead skin cells, resulting in dry and rough patches. Moisturisers are generally the first line of treatment and are designed to enhance the hydration content of the outer layers of skin.
