What is Cryogenic Lipolysis (Fat Freezing) & How Does It Work?
Cryo-lipolysis is a safe and effective procedure, clinically proven to destroy targeted fat cells to re-shape the body without surgery, pain or downtime, and is one of the most significant advances in the field of fat removal. This amazing technology was developed by Harvard scientists, and revealed that fat cells are more responsive to the effects of cold, and crystallise at higher temperatures than other cells.
It works via the application of controlled cooling, which causes approximately 20-30% of the treated fat cells to crystallise and die without damaging the surrounding tissues. The body processes the dead cells over time, which gradually reduces the fat bulges, improving the contours of your body.
EM-LIFT muscle building and fat burning treatments may also be recommended in conjunction with Cryolipolysis for a more toned, defined or athletic appearance.

How Long Does The Treatment Take?
Appointment times can vary from 1-6 hours depending on the number of treatment sites, type of applicators you need, their anatomical location, proximity to each other and applicator times. Your appointment also includes preparation, placement, photos and measurements etc and is much more than just the time on the machine.
Each applicator is generally applied for around 30 minutes to an hour. Your therapist will advise how long your treatment will take after assessing your individual needs.
How Many Treatments Do You Need?
An improvement is seen with each single treatment and most of our clients are satisfied after just one. However, you may require additional treatments depending on your aesthetic preference and individual results. This will be discussed during your consultation to ensure that we manage your expectations.
The same area cannot be retreated for at least another 8 weeks.
What Machine Do We Use?
Like CoolSculpting®, CLATUU® is a TGA registered medical device used for ‘cool assisted lipolysis’ also known as cryolipolyis and fat freezing. CLATUU is the most technologically advanced system available today, and unlike competing cooling treatments, it has 2 handpieces, so that it can treat two sites at once, halving your treatment time, saving you valuable time and money. It also has the world’s first patented 360° cooling applicators, allowing the target temperature to be reached more rapidly, (up to one third faster than traditional cooling methods) for faster and more effective fat reduction.
What Does It Feel Like And What To Expect At Your Appointment?
- We recommend eating a healthy breakfast preferably with some form of protein, and to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Before photographs will be taken from different angles, along with measurements where possible so they can all be compared at your 12 week review.
- We then start the most important process of designing and marking exactly which applicators to use, where they need to be placed, what level of suction to use and how long they need to be on etc.
- It is wise to go to the toilet before the treatment starts as you will need to stay in position for up to one hour once the treatment cycle begins.
- Once you are positioned on the treatment bed, a gel pad is applied over the treatment area, followed by a non-invasive applicator according to our placement markings.
- Suction is then applied using a powerful vacuum to isolate the target tissue. This feels like deep pulling, tugging or pinching which some people find uncomfortable, or slightly painful, but once you relax and the cooling sets in, the area becomes numb, and any discomfort will cease usually within the first 10 minutes.
- After the applicator is removed, the treated area may feel stiff and look like a frozen sausage. This is immediately massaged out and has been shown to improve the treatment outcome but can feel odd, uncomfortable, ticklish or painful and you may even experience vasovagal symptoms such as dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, flushing and sweating. These are all normal, and you may experience some of these symptoms or none at all.
- After massaging, the skin usually appears red or pink in colour for up to an hour and may have associated swelling, tenderness or bruising.
What Can You Expect After The Treatment?
- You may expect some or none of the following symptoms immediately after your procedure, which may persist for up to 8 weeks and are completely normal (redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, itching, skin sensitivity, numbness, tingling and a decrease in sensation)
- Most clients experience none or very mild side effects, but as with any procedure, each person varies. Symptoms always subside over time and we have not seen any long-lasting complications.
- Approximately 1 in 20 people experience a strong cramping, muscle spasm or shooting pain that occurs up to 2 weeks after treatment. Generally this is tolerated without pain relief; however, you may take Panadol if required. If the pain is more severe, please contact your doctor.
Possible Side Effects & Complications
- Paradoxical hyperplasia: This is extremely rare and we have never seen it. Studies estimate an incidence of 1 in 20,000 and is more common in men. It presents as a visible enlargement of the treated area approximately two to five months after treatment and surgical intervention may be required.
- Subcutaneous induration: Is a generalised hardness and/or discrete nodules with or without pain or discomfort within the treatment area. Any hard or lumpy feeling returns to normal after all the crystallised fat cells have been flushed out of the body.
- Temporary hyperpigmentation is extremely uncommon but may occur after treatment, especially for darker skin tones and fades in time or can be treated for a faster result.
- Hernia: Treatment may cause new hernia formation or exacerbate pre-existing hernia, which may require surgical repair.
- Other unknown side effects may also occur.
Please contact your GP if these conditions persist beyond two weeks
After Care:
- You can leave the clinic and go about the rest of your day as normal, it really is like lunchtime lipo!
- During the 6–8 weeks post treatment, we recommend you increase your water intake and massage the area while in the shower to help flush out the crystallised lipids.
- If you experience swelling or bloating, compression tights such as Spanx may make you feel more comfortable, but ensure they cover the entire treatment area and do not cut into it.
- If possible, avoid the use of anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Celebrex for up to 6 weeks post treatment. Capillaries become restricted with these medications and the body’s ability to respond may slow the progress of your result following your treatment. The inflammatory response in your body is the mechanism, which removes the fat cells.
- If you have been advised to take anti-inflammatories to help assist a condition you have, please refer to your GP before following this advice.
- We will organise a short review appointment for you approximately 12 weeks after your procedure to take your after photos and measurements to review your results with the option of further treatments if desired.
When Will You See Results?
Following your fat freezing treatment, the layer of targeted fat will reduce at a gradual pace. Some clients notice changes in as early as two to four weeks post treatment, but more often improvements are seen around 8 weeks but can take 12-16 weeks for the final results as your body continues to pass the dead fat cells.
*Results vary individually, and if you desire further fat loss, additional treatments can be performed on the same area after a minimum of 8 weeks.
How Can You Maximize Your Treatment Results?
- Increasing water intake can speed up your metabolism and help flush the dead fat cells out. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and metabolism found that drinking water (about 500mls) increases the metabolic rate by 30 percent in healthy men and women.
- A healthy diet and exercise routine leading up to and after your procedure is highly recommended.
- There has never been a better time to evaluate your eating habits and introduce exercise to optimise your result.
How Much Does It Cost?
Don’t be fooled by cheap deals. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
How Do You Get Started?
You will need to see one of our body contouring specialists to conduct a thorough and private consultation with you to assess your suitability for the treatment, and analyse your requirements according to your desired body shape. They will then design your personal treatment plan so you know exactly how many applicators are required, how long you will need for your procedure and the exact cost.
After we have determined how long you will need for treatment we can make your appointment for a suitable time and require a $200 non-refundable deposit to secure the appointment timeframe. This deposit is taken off your treatment cost on the day.
