What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation that uses a medical grade scalpel to gently scrape off the top layers of dead skin and facial hair revealing a smoother, brighter, hair free complexion. Sounds scary, right? It really isn’t, as long as you’re in the right hands.
As well as leaving your skin super smooth, you’ll immediately look more radiant with a more even skin tone and texture. All of your peach fuzz will be gone, which is why first-timers say their skin has never felt so soft before, and no, your hair will not grow back thicker and/or darker. This process also allows for greater penetration of active skincare products, and creates a perfect canvas for makeup to glide on evenly, for a flawless appearance.
It is because of this that Dermaplaning is a favourite among male and female actors worldwide, as harsh production lighting and high-definition cameras accentuate make up caking in facial hair and uneven skin surfaces, especially in close ups.
You might be wondering if you should try Dermaplaning versus Microdermabrasion or Glycolic/Lactic Acid Peels for your regular skin smoothing treatment? They are all forms of skin resurfacing that don’t usually have any downtime, but their indications, methods, benefits and results are all slightly different. Depending on your skin condition you might be suitable for all of them, and it could just boil down to your personal preference but we recommend seeing one of our Dermal Therapists to find out which one is most suitable for you.

How Many Sessions Do You Need and How Often?
Dermaplaning takes about 30 minutes and is recommended every 3-4 weeks depending on your hair growth and skin concerns. Results are seen immediately.
How Do You Prepare Your Skin?
No skin preparation is necessary, though better results will be achieved when using active skin care recommended by your Dermal Therapist and regular treatments.
What Does It Feel Like?
Dermaplaning is completely painless procedure and can be compared to the sensation of shaving your legs, but in this case, it’s on your face.
What Can You Expect After The Treatment?
- Your skin will feel super smooth and have a healthy glow
- Smooth and hair free
- Possible mild to moderate redness or sensitivity (similar to a sunburn) lasting 12 to 48 hours
- Skin may feel dry and tight
- Stronger treatments may get some flaking approximately 3 days after your treatment.
After Care
- Most people go straight back to their normal activities.
- It is best not to apply make-up for around 3 hours.
- Keep your skin moist with the skin care provided to you.
- Continue with your usual active skin care once the skin is no longer sensitive.
- Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun, so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway.
Possible Side Effects and Complications
- Small scratches may occur especially if you sneeze or move unexpectedly
- Hyperpigmentation (darker patches of pigment on the skin) lasting 1 to 12 months.
How Do You Maintain The Results?
Daily use of your recommended skin care products and monthly Dermaplaning, Microdermabrasion or Glycolic & Lactic Acid Peel treatments will help maintain long term skin results. As facial hair will continue to grow Dermaplaning is required to keep unwanted hair at bay.
Cant I Just Shave My Face?
To remove your peach fuzz yes, but we don’t recommend it. Apart from removing the vellus hair, the result will not compare to a dermaplaning treatment. We use the right tools and apply the right amount of pressure and angle of the scalpel to achieve the desired results according to your individual needs.
